A few years back, my friend and neighbor Debbie stopped by with a gift, which ended up being one of the most useful food gifts I’ve ever received! It was a ziplock bag filled with a powdery mixture of something she called “SOS Mix.” I wasn’t exactly sure what it was at first, but I knew that it had to be something good. (After all, I knew that Debbie had worked as an agent for the Utah State University Extension Service for over three decades, with an expertise in Food, Nutrition & Health!)

Fast forward to today, and SOS Mix has become a staple in my pantry. I use it all the time, and consider it to be one of the best and most useful food discoveries I’ve ever learned about! And I am very excited to share the magic of SOS Mix with all of you in today’s blog post. 🙂

So let’s cut to the chase—what exactly is SOS Mix?

SOS Mix

What Is SOS Mix?

“SOS” stands for “soup or sauce,” an aptly broad title for this extremely versatile mixture! Among other things, this dry mix can be used as a substitute for cream soup in any recipe. So for any recipe that calls for a can of cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup, you can substitute SOS Mix instead!

And you don’t get just one can’s worth of cream soup, either. Because each batch of SOS Mix will actually make nine cans of cream soup (based on the typical 10.5-ounce can of store-bought cream soup.) And just in case you need further convincing, I’ve outlined some of my favorite things about SOS Mix below! 😉

SOS Mix

5 Things I Love About About SOS Mix

1. It’s Gluten-Free

One frustrating aspect of cooking for my son with Celiac is that so many store-bought foods, including canned soups, contain gluten! It’s nice to be able to mix up a cream soup base at home that is naturally gluten-free.

2. It Contains Simple Ingredients

This homemade soup substitute contains just four simple ingredients (five if you count the optional one), with no mystery fillers or preservatives. And you might already have all the ingredients you need in your kitchen right now!

3. It’s Easy To Make

It only takes about three minutes to measure out the ingredients and mix it up.

4. It’s Inexpensive

As I mentioned earlier, each batch of SOS Mix contains the equivalent of nine cans of cream soup. Each can of store-bought cream soup costs about $1, if you can find them cheap. And according to my quick math, if you buy the SOS Mix ingredients in bulk, you can make a full batch for right around $6.

That works out to about $0.70 per “can” of SOS Mix, saving you about $0.30 per can! (It might not be a life-changing amount of money, but every little bit helps when you’re watching your grocery budget!)

5. It’s Versatile

There are so many ways to use this versatile dry mix! In fact, Debbie and a fellow USU Extension Agent put together a FREE recipe booklet of over 30 recipes you can make using SOS Mix!

Recipes like Macaroni and Cheese, Easy Beef Teriyaki Stir-Fry, and Chicken Pot Pie are just a few of the mouthwatering offerings you’ll find in this useful booklet. Download the free SOS Mix recipe booklet here!

  2. Heat the mixture on your stovetop until thickened.
  3. Add the thickened cream soup mixture to your recipe.

SOS Mix
